I learned a new pain management technique today called “Dialing Back Your Pain” from Nancy. Here’s how it works:
You sit or lay down -whatever makes you most comfortable- and you take a few deep breaths. As you relax your body from the top of your head to your feet you imagine your pain scale dial moving down.
Example: If I am rating my pain at a 5 I can try to dial my pain back to a 3 by breathing and relaxing.
The trick is that stress triggers pain, so when you relax and relieve some of that stress you (in theory) relieve some of your pain. You have to be realistic about it. If you are trying to go from an 8 to a 2 it probably won’t work. Also, keep in mind your ‘tipping number’. Your tipping number (read about these here) is the level of pain you have that you know not much else will work but meds and rest. -Mine is 7.
It is a bit of a mind over matter kind of thing, but I am going to give it a go this week and see if I can make it work.
